Turning Earth Hoxton

📍 Pottery classes in London

7.6

Address in Hoxton offers a supportive and inspiring environment for ceramic enthusiasts. Their studio is well-equipped with a diverse selection of glazes, and the team is known for their generosity in sharing expertise, helping members navigate challenges and fostering a collaborative atmosphere.

While their courses cater to various skill levels, feedback suggests a need for improved class structure and teacher attention. Some beginner students felt overshadowed by more advanced participants, indicating a potential misalignment between course descriptions and actual content. Address could enhance their offerings by addressing these organizational aspects and ensuring a more patient and inclusive teaching approach.

The Turning Earth Hoxton team have all been so supportive and generous with their skill sets. They offered valuable advice, helped prevent disaster in some of my trickier projects, and really made it such a beautiful atmosphere to work in. This studio has a wonderful selection of glazes, fellow members are friendly and inspiring, and I feel very lucky to have come here <3

Completed a 12 week beginners throwing course here about 18 months ago. This turned out to be a mixed class, not just beginners, despite being described as "complete beginner" on the website. Other students were much more advanced and took more attention and time from the teacher than the true beginners. Teacher was impatient and up tight. There were always at least 3 phone calls for teacher animatedly discussing home life, taken in the studio rather than stepping outside for a moment. Left most lessons having been admonished for using techniques a teacher at a different studio had shown me previously in a short course and it not being this teachers chosen technique. No waiting area if early before class (as instructed to be) so be prepared for standing outside in winter as weren't allowed in until teacher arrived, often 5-10 min late. Did not feel like good value for money, completed the course only as it was non-refundable and changing groups/courses wasn't an option due to other commitments. Hope other teachers are more welcoming, patient and open-minded. Experience put me off: returning to collect my finished pottery, trying other courses and trying different pottery studios. I was really disappointed as previous experience with other pottery teachers and studios had been much more positive.

I have been a member for about three years and I really enjoy coming to the studio. I started with a 12-week course which covered all techniques and was very informative and enjoyable. After that I applied for a membership, and to this day the studio is still one of my favourite places to go to. The technicians are very friendly, kind and help with whatever questions I may have, there is a great selection of glazes available and a wonderful community of potters to chat with, share tips and joy or sadness over successful and failed creations.

According to the organisation manager, turning Earth-Hoxton pottery studio is a hobby space and does not align with the needs of ceramic artists. Several factors, including kiln failures, the absence of qualified and experienced technicians, mishandling, space limitations, and the presence of contaminated materials, have led to the departure of myself from the studio.
